Biography

Virginia E. Berry, Designer, Maker, Picker

Early Life
Born in rural Minnesota, Berry was an active and creative child. Her grandmother was an avid quilter and whenever she stayed at grandma’s she would play with scrap fabric and make things – clothes for dolls, from scratch stuffed animals, miniature quilts. She also took classes in the fine arts and had paintings displayed in student shows around town and entered into regional and national contests. Informal lessons from grandma, mom and many other mothers in Girl Scouts, taught Berry how to sew, quilt, design patterns, dye, weave, spin yarn…

Education
While pursuing her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Skidmore College, Berry’s lifetime interest in costumes and ability to sew landed her a job at the Skidmore Theatre Costume shop. Under the tutelage of Patty Pawliczak, Berry honed her designing and pattern drafting skills. She also took a course in textile arts where she learned surface design, decorative embroidery techniques, piece work, advanced weaving and dyeing.

At Skidmore, Berry designed collections for student fashion shows in 2002 and 2004. Dabbling with sustainable fashion and not even realizing it at the time, in 2002 Berry constructed gowns from recycled black and white photos of people from magazines. In 2004, after having spent a year living and studying in Madrid, Spain, Berry made a collection featuring salvaged leather she had found outside a workshop in Madrid. She also recycled scrap fabric from the costume shop into couture dresses; one, her French model asked to bring home with her to Paris.

YazBerry Launch 2005
Berry graduated Skidmore in 2004 and in May of 2005 began YazBerry Fashion. The name YazBerry is a play on the designer’s surname and offers a fresh, funky, alternative to the expected strawberry/raspberry/blueberry while bringing that juicy, fruity taste to one’s mouth when read. From the start YazBerry has been a mix of handmade, one of a kind, designs by Berry and carefully curated vintage finds.

YazBerry’s early designs were art purses, throw pillows, graphic t-shirts and assorted custom orders. From there the designs focused on purses and ready to wear clothing. In 2009, Berry was invited by The Fashion Reporter virtual Magazine and Fashion Evolution Productions to showcase a selection of her purses at a fashion show featuring pieces from the fall collections of Vivienne Tam, Tibi, MNG Mango, Vera Wang and Rebecca Taylor. Purses from the YazBerry Fashion collection were paired with designs by Vivienne Tam and Tibi.

Artist in Residence
In 2010, Berry wrote a proposal for an artist's studio and retail space in Salem, MA, in the City of Salem's Artists' Row artist in residence program. Berry was among five artist groups selected to have space during the summer and fall. During this time she created an extensive portfolio and expanded her line into jewelry, stationary and decor items.

During her stay on Artists' Row, Berry offered workshops and demonstrations to members of the community. She also produced a fashion show as part of the Ahht for Peeps art event, in which her work was modeled by members of the community, real people as she put it. She invited Artists' Row artists Ellen Hardy, President of the Salem Arts Association, to showcase her hand painted silk scarves and neckties and Dan Anthony, to share his handcrafted leather masks.

Retail Co-op
Back in her hometown of Northfield, MN, Berry showcased her work at The Riverwalk Market Fair during two summer seasons and held a seat on the Leadership Committee. Berry also held a share of a unique retail co-op, The Local Joint, featuring both her handmade designs and a broad selection of vintage accessories and home items. Berry’s knowledge of sourcing and valuing vintage items was nurtured by the many experienced pickers in the co-op, further expanding her interest and expertise in picking.

babyBerry
In 2014 as a result of a handmade pair of leather baby booties Berry gave to a good friend, YazBerry friends, family and followers demanded the launch of babyBerry, designer baby booties and accessories made from new and vintage materials. babyBerry is catalog based; through a personalized consultation, Berry customizes each order for the customer based on the colors, design aesthetic and size desired. She also does custom applique onesies, capes, leggings, winter hats and would love to discuss other visions you may have. She has been known to make baby quilts as heirloom quality gifts too!

Shop for YazBerry
Berry’s chronic wanderlust, sense of adventure, and Canadian husband, have her currently residing in Newfoundland, Canada. She has a home studio and several retailers in the area carry her jewelry. Currently Berry is focusing on jewelry design but is available to discuss bespoke purses and other designs. For photos and retail prices of most of YazBerry’s inventory, please visit the facebook photo albums or contact Berry. She is actively pursuing additional retail opportunities for her handmade work as well as a good retail fit for her vintage items. Please contact Berry to discuss.

YazBerry Fashion is artist designed and made, fashion forward, wearable art jewelry and accessories designed for people that love the art of dressing. She also carries a selection of vintage jewelry, purses, scarves, neckties and clothing. Her work is sustainable in nature as she uses a mixture of recycled, found and new objects. The Handcut Leather Lace Process

Artist's Statement

As I walk and drive through life I am constantly thinking, constantly inspired by what I see around me and I try to jot down ideas as I go along. I'm lost without a pen and paper, a check list, a brief note. YazBerry Fashion is my outlet to bring that which inspires me to life, in a tangible, wearable, useful way. I create because whatever it is that keeps me up at night with ideas spinning through my head must be fed by putting my hands to work manifesting my visions.

I am obsessed with recycling; I think I was a first wave 'reduce, reuse, recycle' student and it stuck with me from an impressionable age. I strive to recycle as much as I possibly can; this comes through in my design work. I love working with recycled materials. I almost prefer them to new materials, though I do use a mix in my work. There is something about picking up a discarded material, taking in its limitations and characteristics and finding a way to breathe new life into it. I consider this sustainable fashion.

In the last fifteen years I have made my way around the world. I am inspired by the colors I see, vivid tropical hues, bold eastern pigments and delicious color combinations. I try to capture these colors, textures and sights in my work.

I enjoy examining everything I can with my fingers and my eyes, learning its texture, seeing its ornate details. I pay attention to these things and create with the details and hand in mind. I am inspired by vintage garments, architecture and the textiles themselves. Because I work with a lot of recycled materials, often the material tells me what it should become. I enjoy designing this way and find it more challenging to design from a drawing or a vision and find the materials that work to make this vision come to be.

My work is colorful. It has strong shapes, bold colors and patterns and subtle details reminiscent of vintage craftsmanship. I create with people that enjoy treasure hunting in mind. People that enjoy the art of dressing themselves in special items, pops of color, three or more colors at once like me. I design for people wanting something unique, one of a kind; something not available in malls or department stores. My work is wearable art.

#liberateyourart Postcards Sent Today!

I've finished my postcards and after some frustrating printing mishaps from Fedex office online (BE VERY CAREFUL and put lots of info in notes in your online order because apparently simply clicking on the document type postcards does not guarantee you a postcard sized print...not a user friendly website at all...go to a retail place and pay the little extra to guarantee you get what you want...)

All images are Copyright Virginia E. Berry 2015 and are my original designs.

Here they are!

Two lucky artists in the postcard swap #liberateyourart will get my favorite painting from this exercise.

I now have 8.5 x 11 prints of these images...that I felt compelled to purchase even though they intended to shred them due to the mistake (It just felt so wasteful and since it is my art I thought I'd take them since I NEVER reproduce my paintings...though sadly the edge of the Rat Baby Love image is slightly cut off where the text is...wanh wanh). I am happy to share with you if you want one :) I can have others printed too. Just contact me and name your price. Prints are $1.49 plus postage and envelope so you have an idea of my expense (not to mention labor and creativity but again...name your price ;) ) I may work on the scans of the images with the all white backgrounds to get the shadows out from where the page was warped from watercolors.

Sweet handwritten messages to the unknown artist recipients.

And the envelope off to Kat Sloma the organizer and facilitator of this fun project. I hope I remember to sign up again next year. Looking forward to art in my mailbox!

Also very excited about the vintage circus poster stamps the Post Office had! You can buy your own. I want to send more mail just so I can use these....seriously considering stock piling them since they are forever stamps now. They had me at the stripey clown tights!

The Hand Cut Leather Lace Process

LEATHER LACE

WHAT IS IT?

USA based Artist and Designer, Virginia E. Berry (Me) uses 100% Genuine Leather glove weight Lambskin in her precision, freehand cut and pierced leather jewelry and purses. This technique is referred to as leather lace. It is a play between positive and negative space; a 3-d rendering of a high contrast image.

THE
INSPIRATION:

Mesmerized by a book on Asian Cut Art, Chinese Chung-hua and Japanese Kiri-e at my Grandmother’s, I taught herself to create cut paper art at a young age. I also finds inspiration in Mexican Papél Picado and cut paper art found in other cultures. My designs draw from traditional Asian motifs, Art Nouveau and Art Deco design.

THE PROCESS:

Leather lace requires the steady hand of a surgeon, one slip and the entire piece can be ruined. I draw out my design ideas on paper and use these to develop my pieces. Then, using the drawing as a visual reference guide, I use delicate knives and piercing utensils to freehand cut the design into leather. This is a careful, highly detailed process. Once the basic design in in place, I go back through with a close eye and makes sure all of the cut lines are crisp and smooth.

LEATHER LACE & YAZBERRY:

I started developing my hand cut leather lace technique in 2007. I've explored many tools and have sharpened my methods, always based on freehand cutting and freehand drawing. Leather lace is extremely lightweight and soft to wear. It is very flexible and amazingly durable. I have done durability testing and make sure my cut lines are thick enough so that you cannot tear them with your hands. Trust me, we've tried. To view my full leather lace collection (more to come in the next few weeks), visit yazberryfashion.etsy.com and view the bracelets & necklaces.

PRESS RELEASE YazBerry Fashion opens store on Artists’ Row, sustainable fashion handmade in Salem, MA.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Release

YazBerry Fashion opens store on Artists’ Row, sustainable fashion handmade in Salem, MA.

Saturday, May 15, 2010, Salem, MA

Designer Virginia E. Berry has been selected from a competitive applicant pool to open a retail and studio space on the City of Salem’s Artists’ Row marketplace at 24 New Derby St., Salem, MA, 01970. She designs under her label, YazBerry Fashion and will open from Memorial Day weekend through Halloween. YazBerry Fashion is sustainable fashion, handmade by Berry in her Salem, MA studio.

Sustainable fashion, like most sustainable concepts, has a variety of connotations. YazBerry’s flavor of sustainability is the recycling of previously worn garments and components into new, wearable art creations. Berry refers to this as repurposing; many of her purses were once shirts or tunics, now lined with gently used curtain panels. She combines these repurposed fabrics with new fabrics, unused vintage fabrics she inherited from her Grandmother and antique Japanese kimono obi fabric.

Berry also works in leather and has developed a technique she refers to as ‘leather lace’ which is a cut leather technique drawing inspiration from Japanese cut paper art and Mexican papel picado. Berry applies this technique to bracelets, necklaces and most recently purses.

GRAND OPENING Memorial Day weekend, open Thursdays – Sundays until 6 PM. Berry will also be offering free classes throughout the season; teaching participants various aspects of fashion design, basic sewing skills, costuming and even some musical activities as Berry is also a musician.

About YazBerry Fashion
Founded in 2006, YazBerry Fashion is vintage inspired purses, jewelry, clothing and more designed and handmade by Virginia E. Berry. Bold colors, striking combinations and intricate details drawn from her travels around the world, flavor YazBerry designs. Berry learned to sew from her Mother and her Grandmother, an avid quilter. She is self taught in jewelry making and leather working.

While attending Skidmore College, she worked in the costume shop under the direction of Patty Pawliczak where she learned to fine tune her pattern design and garment construction skills. She also participated in student fashion shows, which sparked her interest in fashion design. For more information on YazBerry Fashion and Designer Virginia E. Berry, visit http://www.yazberry.com. Retro Image Inspired Photographer Dan Vanasse

I've worked with Photographer Dan Vanasse in the past and have always been drawn to the retro feel of his pictures. His color palate often evokes favorite palates of previous decades, especially the mid century modern era. He truly has a knack for capturing people in their best angles and light. He can even make me look like a model :) Here are a few of my favorite pictures from his online portfolio, be sure to check it out:

I Can't Believe it's not Electric!

I just spent approximately 10 hours carving linoleum, setting type, hand printing pink ribbon clothing tags and business cards on a pre-electric printing press! Because this was so much fun and so different, I decided to give you a step by step tour of the process and the cellar print shop at the home of my friend, Jim Bump, Printmaster and Violist extraordinaire!

I received detailed training and was then let loose in the print shop to try to take over the world. Ahem, try to set type and create labels on my own! I must say, it was a complete and total success and about 200 labels and 200 business cards later, I am rather thrilled with my factory like output.

Some tools of the trade Some key tools used in the printing process. The ball is a twine holder. The twine is used to tie around the perimeter of the type face so they don't fall apart as you manuever them and set them into a frame for printing. The wooden blocks are used in the one of the last pre-printing preparation steps to mount the type face in a frame for printing.

Pedal & wheel operated press This press is pedal or wheel operated and is used for large quantity print jobs. I didn't try my hand at this one.

Ink! I love the scissors and the ink was so shiny.

Type face. These are samples of some of the fun designs you can find on type face. It's not limited to just letters. In fact, even photographs can be converted to 'type' and used in a printing press!

YazBerry labels blocked out. After you come up with a concept the first step is to set up your block. Each letter is on a seperate type piece and each space must be tightly filled with spacers. I carved the raspberry out of a linoleum block.

YazBerry labels My finished supply of YazBerry labels.

Business card block, draft 1. This is the first draft of the business card block. I was quite pleased with myself and figured it was good to go. We did a few proofs and realized there was room for improvement. I then made those improvements through a couple more drafts and ended up with a final product I am quite happy with.

YazBerry business card in printing frame The final draft of the business card layout mounted in the printing frame. The metal pieces are tightened with the key you see to make sure nothing moves while printing. The layout of the block required several drafts to make sure the spacing, font size and balance were all pleasing. A four hour process for this amateur printer!

Virginia E. Berry printing Virginia E. Berry, Amateur Printer in action.

A freshly printed business card A freshly printed business card hot of the press! Well, technically it is still on the press, in the jig used to properly place the cards. The shiney black tube is a brayer used to automatically ink the block as you pull the lever to print a new card. Brilliant old fangled technology!!

YazBerry old-timey business cards! The finished product! My new business cards. Deliciously old-timey complete with pointing hands, flourishes and everything!

YazBerry business card factory! Virginia E. Berry, Printer, presents the YazBerry business card factory; 200 delicious cards layed out to dry. Success!

Print shop wall of fame YazBerry business card assumes position in Jim Bump's Print Shop's "Wall of Fame"!

It was 25 Years Ago Today, Virginia Berry Taught the Band to Play!

On May 2, 1982, Designer, Virginia E. Berry was born...

on May 2, 2006, www.yazberry.com came to life!

Happy Birthday to Virginia & YazBerry!!!

So apparently I am now (*in big echoing voice*) a quarter of a century old! My mother so kindly reminded me of this on my Birthday. Actually, I think it's kind of clever...'so how old are you anyway?' 'precisely one quarter of one century old.'

It's amazing how quickly they grow in their first year! (~:o) ) YazBerry has doubled in popularity and size consistently each month. In the business world that is quite desierable. More trendsetters are discovering how great YazBerry goods really are.

In honor of such celebratory occasion, we have added several new items we know people will ask you about:
