YazBerry Recommends: Oh My Stars: A Novel, By Lorna Landvik

It's funny when you visit your grandparents after not seeing them regularly for several months, how they come off being far more quirky than you remembered. Or maybe it is just that you notice their quirks more.

My grandpa is the only man I know that is easy to buy for: give him a gift certificate to a bookstore and he is as happy as a clam. (Side note: why on earth do we say 'as happy as a clam'? Silly colloquial phrase whose origin has fallen victim to fading time). Grandpa will read anything. He loves to read, so does my father for that matter.

While I was home over Memorial Day (note 100 pounds of fabric episode)my grandfather handed me this book Oh My Stars: A Novel, By Lorna Landvik. "Here, I thought of your YazBerry stuff when I was reading this book. The girl in the book does fashion stuff like you do. You might like it."

This is the first book recommended to me by Grandpa, so I thought, "hmm, well it's worth a try, it's not too thick, I might be able to get through it." I must admit I haven't gotten through many books for pleasure since College temporarily (I hope) killed my love a reading as a pastime. I dove into it on my flight home and couldn't put it down. This book is that good.

Violet Mathers is the main character and she has a truly sad childhood. But, she designs and hand makes some incredible clothing, which is her lifeline during her troubles. I don't want to give away too much of the plot as I hate when I know too much. So...at some point after her childhood she hooks up with this awesome band and tours with them. Landvik taps into every single one of your emotions as she takes you on the roller coaster ride that is Violet Mathers life. It honestly brought tears to my eyes and then the next page would bring a huge smile and even a chuckle.

You really should pick it up- it's a page turner and an enjoyable easy read. And, an underlying theme throughout is the fashion piece...intriguing, I know. Also, may I just comment that the texture of the paperback cover is quite appealing: the landscape is matte finish and the guitar is glossy (refer to my confession to understand why I would even notice this). When you do get yourself a copy either check it out from your library or buy it from your favorite Ma and Pa bookstore. Did you know that many used bookstores will order books for you if they don't have them on the shelf and that they are often cheaper than the national chains?

At least in the case of my favorite used bookstore around the corner, Ben Franklin Bookstore they will help you with this. The Dan and I go in there all the time with miscellaneous book search requests. Be sure to frequent them if you live in the area. I love this store by the way...they have two of the most cuddly cutest cats on the planet! Yay catbabies! One which they rescued from the ally this winter...a cute super furry baby!

ME = Big fan of Portland, ME

'CLEARANCE: The Four Horseman' by Greta Bank

Apparently I'm on a shout-outs-to-places-I-love kick. This past weekend, Dan Yaz.;,.;sky ;) & I took a fun road trip to ME.

That's Maine in case your shorthand for states is a bit rusty...just can't get enough of that little play on words.

First suggestion: go to Scarborough Beach en route to Portland. Nice sandy beaches, sand bar, cool shells to collect and calm water. AND the best part is there are not too many people because it is sort of a 'secret' beach.

 'Cerulean Blue' by Lisa Dahl

Second suggestion: go to the "arts district" in Portland. Portland is a very healthy lively city with tons of great local stores and art galleries and restaurants (and no empty store fronts that I saw (Worcester, take note). Walk along Congress Street to satisfy your senses with this great ME treasure.

Our first stop was YES Books, a used bookstore with a maze of hand built book shelves, giant 5 foot tall clay vases made by a local artist and of course a great book selection. Dan always judges a bookstore by its Horror book selection. If they have a Horror section = good bookstore. If they answer hunh? when you ask for the Horror section = not so good. I just like to poke around looking for surprising books in any genre.

After we had or literary fix, we filled our bellies at Wild Burrito. These are the biggest most tasty burritos ever...and the decor is quite distinct (love it!) I wish I had snapped a photo. I snagged The Bollard Magazine during lunch to inform myself on how cool Portland is once I got back into the car. This Trip culminated 4 hours later in Lubec, Maine - the easternmost town in the USA!

Be sure to check out The Bollard's website as you can view a PDF version of the magazine. There is a great article on one of the neatest stores on Congress St., Strange Maine. It's a treasure trove of used albums, obscure books and trinkets from my youth. It's not to be missed on a Portland excursion.

We were also some of the lucky first customers at the Grand Opening of thrift shop upstairs of Strange Maine. I apologize cool new thrift shop...I don't recall your name and did not jot any notes down. But, I will say that Dan wanted to buy all of the CD's & DVD's they had as they were all in his taste and I fancied the majority of their vintage clothing...tried several things on but alas only the buyer for this store can fit all of the XS vintage treasures she has for sale. Do check it out if XS is your calling card.

As we continued our stroll down the street, we wandered into SPACE | Gallery. This is a very edgy gallery with a fantastic modern artists on display! Both of the images depicted here are featured at SPACE. Be sure to read the background on the artists!

And finally, as an Encore to the afternoon, we visited Encore! A vintage & consignment shop that reminded me of the Skidmore College Costume Shop! I fell in love instantly! Racks and Racks packed to the max with exquisite specimens of vintage fashion joy! I indulged my vintage fashion tooth and bought a mint apricot '70's belted shirt dress from France and some black fully embroidered in red and gold fitted pants by Nicole Miller. MMMMM Vintage Fashion makes mouths happy...

Also, I want to tell you a vintage secret...I don't give many of these out. I was chatting with the Proprietor, Ms. Rita Prout-Farley and she informed me that only a few days a week she opens the upstairs of the building and it is a huge clearance sale where she sells groups of clothing for very cheap just because they have cool fabric. A designers dream come true. Unfortunately we didn't get to partake as they were not open Friday and we were on the road to Lubec Saturday. GO please enjoy this vintage treasure chest!

Why I love Minnesota: Reason #653

'Bridge Before Collapse' By John Heinzerling
Why I love Minnesota

An essay by Virginia E. Berry

A reflection by Virginia E. Berry

An opinion article by Virginia E. Berry

My mom called me from work last night at 7pm CST.

Me "What on earth are you doing still at work? Go home!" as I mumbled through dripping hair with soap on my face. I had sprinted from the shower since I heard my phone ring.

My mom "Oh good you're at home. Can you go to your computer?"

Me "Yeah, why?"

My mom "Go to www.kare11.com they are showing live footage of a bridge that collapsed during rush hour on 35W (an interstate)."

Me "What? That's really creepy."

So I hopped back into the shower to rinse off and get back to my computer. I was pretty shocked. Fortunately (thank you American media for your rated G newscasts) the live footage wasn't showing much. I listened to the news throughout the evening.

What struck me the most powerfully was the press conference statement from the Red Cross (my summary of what they said): Please, there are too many volunteering to help. We appreciate your willingness to help, but have more than enough volunteers at this time. We have been receiving numerous phone calls.

If you would like to contribute the best way you can help at this time is to offer a donation www.redcrosstc.org because this effort will be very expensive for the Red Cross (I just donated I hope you can too). You can also give blood.

I love you Minnesotans! Minnesotans are some of the kindest most considerate people on the planet! So many want to help that the Red Cross of all groups, has to turn them away! This is reason #653 why I love Minnesota!

Also, in case you are wondering- so far all of my loved ones in Minnesota are well and accounted for. I hope yours are too.

DISCLAIMER: Please only visit these sites if you are not bothered by strong images. They are very emotionally charged.

Here is a powerful slide show on www.msnbc.msn.com click on Launch to view the images.

Also, this was a pretty interesting site too with people submitting their eyewitness photos.

My thoughts are with everyone touched by this act of nature.

Peace be with you,

Virginia
